4/11/2014 Snookie vs The US Post Office

(Mesa, AZ)

My mom’s birthday was yesterday.  I sent her a gift from Arizona City on Thursday, April 3rd, plenty of time for it to arrive even a day or two early.  In fact, the gift DID arrive on time in Wilmington, Delaware.  I know this because I have a tracking number.

When I called my mom on her birthday I was quite surprised, and dismayed, to hear that the package was not delivered.  I immediately tracked it and found that it was out for delivery.  Out where?  We agreed when I talked to her again that it would probably be delivered today.  A day late.

I called her this morning and asked if it arrived and she told me no and that the mailman had already arrived and that she talked to him about it and he said that if it was in his facility he would have delivered it.  He suggested I call the Postal Service and find out what mail facility it was in.

I went back to tracking web site and saw that it said that delivery had tried to be made yesterday but no one was home and a notice was left.  Hmmmm,,,,,  I called my mom back and she assured me she was home at 2:11pm when the delivery was supposedly attempted and nothing was put in her mailbox.  I have to even wonder why a different mailman than her regular one would have made this delivery.  It isn’t a huge box that the regular carrier couldn’t have carried it in his mail pouch.

I called the 800 # listed on the web site for Customer Service and played hell trying to get to a human being.  I was ready to go postal if I hadn’t gotten to the human when I did.

The customer service rep was extremely hard to understand.  I asked her where she was located and she told me in the United States.  To be honest with you I didn’t believe her.  I pressed and asked where.  She repeated my question back to me and I felt like she was buying time to come up with an answer.  She replied, “The east coast” I’m not buying it.  I asked where on the east coast and she came back with New Jersey – New York.  Well which is it???

She asked me for my tracking number and I gave it.  She read to me word for word what I had already read on the web site.  I told her  that my mother had talked with the mailman and that he said it wasn’t there for him to deliver.   I asked what facility it was in and she gave me the phone number.

I called the local post office and explained everything to him and he put me on hold.  He finally came back and said, “Mrs. Quinn, I have the package right here.  I don’t know why it wasn’t delivered yesterday but I’ll find out.  I’ll have it delivered to your mother this afternoon.”

Well, lo and behold, it WASN’T delivered.  I am beyond livid!

Tomorrow, I take on the United States Postal Service!  It ain’t gonna be pretty!

Today Bob and I walked around the resort we’re in and I have to say it is very, very nice.  We’re amazed at the nicely furnished card rooms that are available for reserving for your game.  The pool/billiards rooms are just wonderful and nicely furnished.  There is a first class wood shop, three pools, a hair salon, a nail salon, a barber shop, a library, little gathering places tucked here and there all over the park, a restaurant for burgers and fries and such, ballrooms with nicely padded chairs.  These are just some of the things we saw.

We went for happy hour from 3 – 5 where they served dollar beers and had live music for entertainment.  Speaking of entertainment, next year their headliner is Bill Cosby for one of his shows.  They’ll also have the Little River Band, Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers, a Frankie Valli tribute and several other names.

We talked to several residents here and they all talked about the many activities in this park and how there was just so much to do if you wanted to.  We’re pretty sure we’re going to like it here next fall…..if all goes according to plan that is.

Tomorrow morning we start our trek eastward.

4/10/14 Tires: No Problem

(Mesa, AZ)

Our problem hydraulic hose is a thing of the past for us now.  This morning we found that everything held the way it was supposed to and there were no leaks and no more popping sounds.  It’s all good.

We thanked everyone at
Robert Crist RV and we were on our way.  We found a Michelin tire dealer not too far away and headed there.

The fellow behind the counter came out to look at our tires and he was stumped as to what was causing it.  The outer edges of our two front tires look like they are being chewed up.  Other than that the tires are performing as they should are wearing evenly and otherwise fine.  He called the business owner out to see if his years and years of experience could shed some light.  He was equally as baffled.  Both had said that they had never seen this before and didn’t have an answer as to why it was happening.  As far as they were concerned the tires were safe and why the edges were ragged was a mystery.

They did direct us to another business and a fellow named Randy who had years of experience with tires, alignment and RV’s.  It didn’t take long for us to get there and we found that Randy was expecting us because the guys from the tire place called and told him we were coming.  He came out to look at the tires and was promptly stumped.  He called two others over and they took a look.  They visually checked the alignment and saw no need to actually do an alignment.  They were stumped.  Bob finally said, “Let me throw this out there.  We were in a blacktop parking for three months with near 100 degree temps a lot of the time.  This 5th wheel was moved a lot, a whole lot, by fork lift.  It was turned on a dime time and time again.  Would that have chewed up the edges like that?”  They all agreed that that could have certainly done this.  So that’s what we’re going with.

By the time we were done there we decided to find a place in the area and spend the night, getting an early start tomorrow.  We decided on Val Vista RV Resort which is just huge!  Over 1500 sites!  We got a pull through and after we got set up we took the time to look around us.  We couldn’t believe what we were seeing!  About six sites down, and there was nothing in between, we saw a Mobile Suite 5th wheel, just like ours.  We also saw a Ford F550, just like ours.  A short while later the couple who own these drove by and stopped and talked to us.  In the few minutes we chatted we found out the fellow retired from the Army with 32 years of service,,,,just like Bob.  Actually, Bob had 33 years of service.  We were hoping to get to spend some time with them but they already had plans for the evening hours.

We made a run to the local Walmart to get just a few things in and then settled in for the afternoon and evening.

4/9/2014 Repair Day

(Mesa, Arizona)

Not knowing what time we were on the schedule for our service appointment we had no choice but to get up early so that we could ready at a moment’s notice if they had to move our rig to a different location.

At 8:30 our service tech was at the ready and started working.  I happen to be within earshot when I heard him utter those stomach wrenching words……UH-OH.   UH-OH??????   What’s UH-OH?????  He looked at me and said, “They sent the wrong hose.”  If I was a cartoon my nostrils would have flared, my face would have turned fifty shades of red and steam would have shot out of both ears.     UH-OH?????  No!  I don’t want to hear that!

At just that moment Bob came around the corner and I called him over.  I nodded towards the service tech and he was given the news.  I literally saw his shoulders slump.  I know he was imagining Lazy Days/Tucson all over again.  Our service tech went to find out what could be done to fix this.  He returned a few minutes later and told us that we could order a new one or get one off the local economy at a cost to us of $70.00.  Without hesitation Bob told him to get one off the local economy, we would pay for it.  Now this Queen of Cheap saw RED!

I had come across the cell phone number of the designer of this hydraulic system just the other day.  I knew right where it was.  This is the fellow who flew out to Tucson to meet with us last June when we couldn’t get the system fixed there.  I got his voice mail and left him a message.  Oh boy did I leave him a message!  By the time I was done he knew in no uncertain terms that I was not a happy camper and that I had no love for Lippert.  In essence, I ripped him a new one!

Fifteen minutes later Bob came into the rig and said, “Dale, our service writer just came to see me and she said I don’t know what your wife did but we just got a call from Lippert and we were told to do whatever it took to get this fixed and that we were to send all bills to Lippert and not charge you anything!”

Just minutes later my phone rang and it was Bob T. from Lippert.  He could not apologize enough for the mistake made in sending the wrong hose.  He was none to happy with his parts department.  From the way he sounded heads were likely to roll.

So we got the new hose and it was put on and 10 minutes later Bob noticed it was leaking.  He went looking for the tech and after a minor adjustment it seems all is well.  We’ll stay here another night so that we can measure the landing gear to make sure everything is holding and working as it should.

We have noticed some “popping” but the tech told us that it was likely air in the lines and that when raise and lower the landing gear a couple of more times that will work its way out.  We hope so.

We also had the people here look at a tire we had some questions about.  We have one tire that looks really chewed up.  It was suggested that we see the Michelin people as it shouldn’t be this worn with less than 5000 miles on it.  Tomorrow I take on Michelin!

I found a Capriotti’s here in Mesa!  Long time readers are familiar with that name as its our favorite sub shop that originated in Delaware.  I was all set to get something from there for dinner but Bob didn’t feel like going out after the day we had.  I understood and since we’ll likely be in the area one more day perhaps I’ll get a sub tomorrow.  Instead we had pepper and egg sandwiches.  If you aren’t familiar with this, its scrambled eggs and strips of cooked bell pepper together on a roll.  Add some ketchup and its pure heaven!

Our evening has been filled with the old black and white TV shows from years gone by.

What a day!

4/8/2014 Farewell Quail Run

(Arizona City / Mesa, AZ)

You know, its been a long time since we’ve all sung together!  So clear your throats, do your me-me-me’s and get ready to belt this out!

And a one and a two,,,,,

On the road again
Just can't wait to get on the road again
The life we love is makin' new Rv'in' friends
and we can't wait to get on the road again
On the the road again
Goin' places we've never been before
Seein' things we may never see again
And we can't wait to get on the road again

Yep, we’re hittin’ the road!  A whole 73 miles today.

We were up early this morning anxious to get ‘er done and get this rig rollin’.

Us and several other are leaving today.  The park is darn near empty now.

Things went smoothly, thank heavens.  We had some so long’s to say which are always hard for me but we got through it and nine minutes after our goal of being on the road by nine,,,,we were.

So we’re on the road, another adventure, another (hopefully) awesome journey.

IMG_7981

We’re only traveling 73 miles today.  We’re headed to Robert Crist RV in Mesa.  We have a hydraulic line that needs to be replaced because Bob found that it was bulging in spots when he checked our fluid level one day.  This picture was taken in mid-February and the bulge has gotten progressively worse to the point Bob wrapped rags around it in case it burst.  We certainly wouldn’t want hydraulic fluid spewing all over the compartment,,,,been there, done that.

IMG_6387
I had sent pictures to our contact in Lippert.  If you remember the man who designed this hydraulic system flew to Tucson last June to meet us at Lazy Days because there was just problem after problem with it.  He got right back with me and said that a new hose would be sent to our repair facility of choice and assured me that it would be covered cost wise.  I’ve found that it pays to keep notes of phone numbers and email addresses of people you deal with.

Without incident we arrived at the repair facility and got set up with electric and water in our fresh water tank.

We aren’t scheduled for work until tomorrow so Bob and I set out to find a Verizon store so that we could reinstate the military discount we have with them.  Our verification of eligibility had expired and this Queen of Cheap just hated not getting that discount so that had to be remedied.  While there we purchased a Jetpack for our WIFI connection.  We had to pay for it but there is a rebate involved so I’m a happy camper.

Late this afternoon our buddy Richard stopped by.  We ended up having dinner, BBQ’ing off the back of the truck.  We were driving the employees here crazy with the smell of BBQ chicken wafting through the complex.

It was good to see Richard again.  We had first met him six years ago when we workamped at the Quail Run that very first year.  We’ve kept in touch ever since and see him as often as we can.  We were supposed to be close to him in Oregon in June but of course our plans had to change.

The rest of the evening we watched ME-TV.  The old shows that we watched as kids.  The Danny Thomas Show, The Donna Reed Show, Gilligan’s Island, Dragnet and a few others.  All in black and white.

Tomorrow the repairs begin!  Here’s hoping it all goes smoothly.

4/6-4/7/2014 Packin’ Up–Headin’ Out

(Arizona City, AZ)

Bob is running around like a chicken with its head cut off.  He has so many things to do.  Massive to do lists kept in the recesses of his mind.  So much to do, so little time.  The park model to take care of, P-traps to fill and the air conditioner that needs a cover constructed so sand doesn’t blow in, the car to get ready for a summer in storage, the 5th wheel to get road ready.  And the list goes on and the hours fly by.

My tasks aren’t nearly as many or as time consuming.  I did our laundry for the last time, put things back in their place for traveling, completed the paperwork for the Bingo season, did our taxes.  Taxes,,,,,yeah, REFUND!  Yeah, yeah, I know, refunds aren’t a good thing but it sure beats having to pay more!

No time for the pool right now, unfortunately.

Monday evening I went to Bonnie Larson’s place and we hosted an ice cream sundae party for some friends in the park.  A nice way to end the season.

By night’s end we were 90% ready to go.  Of course we’ll still have to do last minute things in the morning but we’re hoping to be on the road by nine.  We won’t have far to go as we’re only going to Mesa, about an hour’s drive west.  We have a hydraulic hose that needs to be replaced so we’re headed back to Robert Crist RV to get this taken care of.  We’re hoping to only be here for two days, three at most.  We’re keeping our fingers crossed!  Remember what happened last year when we went to the repair shop?  97 days later!!!!  I shudder to even think about it.

4/5/2014 Bird in the Bush

(Arizona City, AZ)

It was just six months or so ago that Bob landscaped our yard at our park model.  Some plants that were nothing more than a few stems with a couple of leaves and bushes that measured only a foot high.

Look at then today!

We’ve got blooms and the plant has doubled in size.  This is the same plant as the one above on the left.

IMG_7961
The oleanders are blooming with lots of pink flowers and they grew enough that we even considered trimming them.

IMG_7962
Our cactus has new leaves?  Leaves certainly doesn’t sound right, the sections of the cactus below must have a common name that I just can’t think of right now.  Anybody???

IMG_7963
This cactus is just loaded with flowers but they won’t bloom before we leave so we’ll miss it this year.

IMG_7964
This orange tree was hacked to hell and back last year in an attempt to trim it.  We so wish we had done it before anyone else had a chance to get their hands on it, but it is what it is.

IMG_7965

It did green up which surprised us and a dove thought it was a great place to make a nest.

IMG_7966
Since the water bib is so close to this tree the dove has gotten quite used to Bob.  In fact, he can pet her now and she doesn’t even flinch.  She knows he won’t hurt her.

This cactus belongs to our neighbors Grant and Wendy.  Isn’t it beautiful?

4/1-4/4/2014 It’s Winding Down

(Arizona City, AZ)

Once the first of the month came the RV section of the park has really thinned out.  Very few RV’s left now and lots of people in the park models have moved on also.  Kinda, sorta, if you use your imagination, somewhat like a ghost town if you will.

Bob has been working on the irrigation system he is putting in at the park model.  We planted all those bushes and now they have to be watered to keep them going for what is predicted to be a hotter than usual and dry summer.  By the way, did I tell you that we just had the second warmest winter on record?  We also heard on the Weather Channel the other day that the season that different parts of the country experienced this winter is what they can expect for a few years to come.  Sorry east coast, I know you had a bitter, snowy winter.

Wednesday evening, 35 of us went to the Tumbleweed Inn for dollar taco night.

IMG_7959

I heard the low rumble of a lot of planes flying overhead and I knew in an instant what it was.  Over in Eloy, the next town over, there was a big event in the works.  At the Skydive Arizona facility there was a huge jump taking place.  Two hundred and twenty two skydivers were jumping at the same time and were going to make two formations.  This would be a world record!  I was able to get a picture of the eleven planes.

IMG_7949

Bonnie Larson and I wanted so badly to go over to the airport to watch the jump but we couldn’t get a definite time of when it would take place.  There’s too much to do to just go and hang out at the airport all day in hopes the winds would stay calm and the everything went according to plan.

I made a trip to Lowe’s to pick up more dowels for Wannadinger sticks.  Our friend Kenny G, yep, that’s what we call him, has a drill press set up in the shed with vises and he said that he would make us more sticks.  We’ll have plenty for parties next season.

Our time here in Quail Run is getting short.  I’m very mixed feelings about this.  I’m so ready to get on the road because we’ve been in Arizona much too long, fourteen months with the exception of six weeks last summer.  At the same time I hate to leave my friends who will stay in the park a while longer.
