There are more two wheeled vehicles in this part of South Dakota than four wheeled ones right now and Sturgis Week hasn’t even started. It may not have started but there is no doubt opening day is nearing and nearing quickly.
Our campground is starting to fill up and so far we haven’t had any problems from anyone which is a good thing. Bob and I have visions of drunken brawls and who knows what else.
We see a lot of handshakes and back slapping going on as new tent-ers arrive daily. We’ve talked to some of the bikers and some are here for their eighth and ninth years.
Bikes arrive being driven in, carried in the backs of pick-up trucks, on small trailers, in big utility trailers, in trailers that are color coordinated to the 40 foot motor homes that pull them.
There are matched sets….his and hers. Blue ones, red ones, maroon ones and the ever popular black ones. Ninety nine percent of the bikes are Harley’s. With saddle bags and without. With windshields and without. Some are fully equipped with radios and CD players. One thing I can say about all of them, they are Shiny! With a capital S!!!
Quite a few men are here alone, wives left behind in states faraway. They are like kids at camp. They get right to work putting their tents up, blowing up the air mattresses (remember most of the these guys are retired military) getting their Badlands/Black Hills maps out deciding with their buddies which loop they’ll ride the next day.
All of the this going on and Sturgis Week doesn’t even start for another few days. There is so much excitement in the air as the new bikers arrive its like Halloween, Christmas and 4th of July all rolled into one. I think this is going to be a week to remember.
