12/21/06 Off to the Park We Go

Today we went to Fred Howard Park. The park was named in honor of Fred H. Howard, former Mayor of Tarpon Springs. Mr Howard also served on the County Park Board for more than 30 years. He a successful real estate businessman who was very civic minded and served the area in many political and organizational capacities. Mr. Howard worked to secure the property for development as a north county park. The park consists of 155 acres and is situated on the Gulf of Mexico.

This is the best state park we have ever been in. It is absolutely beautiful.

There are nine picnic pavilions that are very nicely kept. Each has a dozen or so large picnic tables and everything is in good repair and very clean. Here are some pictures of what we saw.

One of the pavilions and below is the view from this pavilion. What a great place to have a picnic!

Here is a picture of the view from the causeway that goes out to the island part of the park. The island has a wonderful swimming beach, white sand, clean and pretty shells for the taking. On either end there is fishing along with both sides of long causeway out here.

We saw quite a few jet skis being off loaded while here and also several windsurfers.

Another view from the island.

A view from the parking lot on the island of the causeway used for fishing and walking.

The State of Delaware could really take some lessons from Florida on park management!

So there it is, our visit to Fred Howard Park a place that we'll come back to again and again while we're here.

I enjoy spending a couple hours in the morning at least once a moth at the park reading. One of my favorite quiet "beaches" for packing a light lunch, a chair and a book.
