4/10/2010 Flowers, Flowers, Everywhere

Before I get started on today’s entry I need to say a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my mother. Happy Birthday Mom, hope you have a great day and I wish I was there.

We were up fairly early this morning considering the noise of trucks coming and going all hours of the night didn’t allow for a good night’s sleep. We stopped at the brick building with Westgate on it and the Stop and Shop attached to it to pay for our night’s stay on the way out. I went into the Stop and Shop and asked where I paid for the campground stay. The lady behind the counter said that I would have to go next door to pay but that the office was closed today and they wouldn’t be back until Monday morning at eight. We weren’t hanging around!

We’re heading to Austin but don’t know if we’ll make it the whole way today or not. Not having a good night’s sleep Bob could very well call it an early day.

We got off the main Interstate highway and took the less traveled state road. Much more scenic as we drove through ranch land, farms and small towns. We passed a lot of historical markers along the way and finally pulled over to find out what this was all about. Well, we really didn’t pull over for that reason but it sounded better than telling you Bob had to pee. It just so happens that where we stopped there was a marker.

This marker makes note that this is the place where the Butterfield Trail, also known as the California Trail was. This trail is the road the Pony Express, stagecoaches and wagon trains traveled

I insisted Bob get his picture taken next to this piece of history. Note: that IS coffee in that cup!

We passed HUGE farms all ready for planting.

As far as one can see, plowed field.

We went through this one town called Brady whose claim to fame is its the center of Texas, I guess we really were deep in the heart of Texas! It is also home to the Bulldogs which I imagine is the high school mascot. It’s other claim to fame is that its the Home of the World Famous Goat BBQ Cook-off! Hmmmm…Yum. . . Ewwww, yuck!

We stopped to get fuel and I knew we were in Texas when this fellow walked across the lot to his truck and I took notice of his SPURS!

Further down the road we started noticing the abundance of wildflowers along the roadsides.

These are Bluebells. They look like miniature lupines.

I don’t know what this crop is,,,,but sure is a bright green.

This is a field of daisies and you can see the colorful wildflowers in front.

The colors just kept me captivated as we drove down the road. There was no reading going on today!

An abundance of bluebells! This was just breathtaking!

We did make it all the way to Austin and pulled into the Austin Lone Star RV Resort where our friends Rich and Jackie live. We met this couple back in ‘03 at a campground in Virgina and have seen them in Delaware, Florida and now Texas.

They weren’t expecting us until tomorrow and we didn’t know there was an Antique Car Show going on and that their place was full until we called them to let them know we were coming in today. When they told us there was no room I immediately got the campground book out and started looking. My phone rang a few minutes later and it was them telling us to come on in that, in fact, there was a space available for us and it was the space right in back of them. Not only a space available but one so close. How lucky was that?

Rich and Jackie have lived here for two years now and just love Austin. We can see why. They came here when Jackie was a traveling nurse and when she had the opportunity to stay on as a regular employee they jumped at the chance. Rich works for the RV Resort so it all turned out good. Several years before, their daughters both moved to Texas so now this family that lived in Virginia are all together again in Texas.

Rich and Jackie took us to Logan’s Steakhouse for dinner once we got set up and settled in. They picked this restaurant because they serve delicious hamburgers and they looked at ME when they said that. Hmmmm,,,,,think they read this blog?

We had a great meal and the best dinner companions anyone could ask for. And yes, delicious hamburgers.

Snookie, those are Bluebonnets, not bluebells. The Bluebonnet is the Texas State Flower. And you're so right, they look like large lupines that we see out here in AZ.

And the red flowers scattered amoung the bluebonnets are Indian Paint Brushes.

Oh BTW... beautiful pictures!!! Especially the bluebonnets. Wow! But of course, they make me feel like I am at home. We had a pasture, when I was a kid, that was covered in bluebonnets every spring. Love them.

Love the flowers pics!

At least you tried to pay them for the site. Perhaps if they kept better track of their overnight campsite fees, they would have the money to fix up their park a bit better? Geeesh
