4/7/2010 Truck Business

Our truck is our focus today. We have to get it inspected since it has been three years since we’ve had tags in Texas and the rules say when we hit the Texas border we must re-inspect. We also have to get a new windshield sticker that allows us on military bases without having to go through a third degree to get on post. We lost the last one we had when we replaced the windshield, we didn’t know the windshield guy had a magic tool that would take it off and transfer it to the new glass. Lesson learned.

So Bob finds out that there is an Inspection place right here on post. That is a good thing. By the time we’re up and moving and ready to take care of the task at hand it is nearly noon. Hey, we’re retired, we can take our time! Of course when we get there we find out that they are closed for lunch. No problem, we’ll go get the windshield sticker. We go to the welcome center on post where the office is said to be located only to find they moved the office to another building. Thankfully, it was close by. Bob gathers our registration, the insurance papers and takes off to get the windshield sticker. I stayed behind in the truck, sat in the sunshine and read my book. Bob was back within minutes with the news that the windshield sticker couldn’t be issued until the truck was inspected. Oh, what a vicious circle!

To pass the time until the inspection lane opened again we went in search of the commissary. We walked the aisles to get an idea of the prices here in Texas and to make a mental shopping list for when we came back to do a major shopping.

Lunchtime over, we made our way back to the inspection building. Paperwork in hand we headed inside to get on the docket for inspection. It didn’t take long before we were called and Bob handed over the truck keys. This is completely different from Delaware where the vehicle owner drives their car or truck through an inspection lane. Here, the vehicle stays in one place and everything is checked out. I don’t have a clue how they check brakes. After about 20 minutes we got the keys back with the paperwork proclaiming our truck was in good working order. Now back to the windshield sticker office. That was taken care of fairly quickly so we are now legal!

Meatballs sandwiches from Subway proved to be a good choice for dinner and we spent the evening watching TV.
