I’ve compiled some facts about Key West from several different sources such as brochures, the Internet, local newspapers and people I’ve talked to.

So the question of the day is, Did you know…..?

Did you know that forty two bridges connect Key West to the mainland of Florida?

Did you know the third largest coral reef in the world, 160 miles long, is off the coast of Key West?

All of the sand on the beaches of Key West were shipped in on barges from the Caribbean?

Did you that the average commute in Key West is 15 minutes?  (But NOT if you are downtown towing a 38 foot 5th wheel!)

Did you know that Key West is the southernmost city in the United States?

Did you know that the city of Key West is closer to Cuba than it is to Miami?

Did you know that even though Cuba is only 90 miles away, you still can’t see it from Key West?

Did you know that compared to the rest of the U.S. the cost of living in Key West is 40% higher?

Did you know that the whole island is a bird sanctuary since there are many endangered species there?

Did you know that Happy Hour beings at 9AM at the Schooner Warf Bar?   (Shhhh,,,Bob doesn’t know this)

Did you know that three Civil War forts are located on Key West?

Did you know that average cost of a home in Key West is $390,700.00?

Did you know that even though Key West is the southernmost point in the United States, it was Yankee territory during the Civil War?  (This one surprised me!)

Did you know that Operation Petticoat, The Rose Tattoo, Reap the Wild Wind, PT 109, Beneath the 12 Mile Reef, License to Kill, and Running Scared are all movies that were filmed on Key West?

Did you know that the student to teacher ratio in Key West is 14 to 1?

Did you know that the nearest Wal-Mart is 126 miles away?

Did you know that people born in Key West are called Conchs?

Did you know that Key West has not been directly hit by a hurricane since 1919?

Did you know that the temperature in Key West has never dropped below 41 degrees?

Did you know that there are about 25,000 people that live in Key West?

Did you know that Key West is the only city in the continental United States that never gets frost?

Did you know that President Harry S Truman had his “winter White House” in Key West?

Did you know that the highway that ends in Key West, U.S Highway One, is 2,209 miles long and runs from Fort Kent in Maine?

Did you know that Key West has more bars per capita than any other place in the country?

Did you know that back in 1889, Key West was the biggest city in Florida?

Did you know that Key West has more churches per capita than any other place in the country?

Did you know that Key West has the most inhabitants of any of the keys?

Did you know the first international flight left from Key West?  In 1927, the Pan American airlines flew a plane from Key West to Havana Cuba.

Did you know the highest elevation in Key West is 18 feet above sea level?

Did you know that most of the 40 cats living at the Hemingway House have six or seven toes because they are all descendants from Hemingway's cat?

When we were there a few years ago over Thanksgiving I think the temperature was @45.
