11/12/2010 Floor Shopping

After a morning of doing all of our normal every day things, Bob and I climbed into the truck to take on a task that I don’t thing either one of us was looking forward to. We had been out previously, “just looking” for the new flooring we’re going to be putting in the park model. Today, decisions had to be made because we are just, plain and simple, running out of time. We’ve only got six weeks left before we move back into the 5th wheel.

On the way I asked Bob (again) what he wanted to put down on the floor. He replied, “Replace the carpet and put new tile down over the linoleum. Hmmm,,,this isn’t exactly what I had in mind. I want to get rid of the carpet altogether and put laminate flooring down throughout. It seems most everyone in the park, between last year and this year, are putting new floors down. The majority is going with the wood like laminates. I’ve been in quite a few park models here and all those that have all already completed the job just rave about them. I’m leaning this way.

When we reached the Home Depot Bob told me to go on to the flooring department and he would me meet there in a few minutes. I went straight to the laminate flooring section bypassing carpet altogether. When he arrived there a few minutes later he found me checking out the laminates. After looking for a few minutes he said, “We can go with this if you want, I have no problem putting this down.” Whew! We’re on the same page.

Of course the ones we really liked were the ones that came in a box that covered fifteen and a half feet for fifty bucks a pop! After a bit of figuring we soon moved out of the higher end of the Pergo section and moved down the aisle a little bit to the more affordable choices.

We found one that we liked, it was in our ballpark as far as cost was concerned and Home Depot offers a military discount of ten percent which would help with the bottom line. I suggested we go over to Lowe’s to look just in case they had one we liked better.

The scenario there played itself out the same way. The ones we just loved were priced way more than what we were willing to put out for a place we only spend six a months a year in and not even that long this year.

Even the mid-priced boxes of laminate was going to be pricey. We found one color of laminate that we both just fell in love with. This particular brand was having a ten percent off sale and Lowe’s also offers the military discount. We kept looking and a salesman came over to offer his help. We asked him to help us find the samples of the ones we liked so we could take them home and put it against the cabinets. Of course the samples are just small pieces easily held in the hand. He suggested we take whole planks home and we jumped at the chance. Four full sized planks later we were on our way home.

In addition to the laminate flooring that we had samples for we knew that we were going to have to buy to different types of underlayment material. One, a water barrier and the other,,,well, I don’t know what the other does. We could get a two in one roll that combined both types but it was bit pricier but much easier to use. To us, the ease of application would be worth the extra money.

By the end of this afternoon Bob had a splitting headache with all the figuring of square footage, store discounts and military discounts. I think if his head exploded like he claimed it was going to be nothing but dollar signs, percentage signs, rulers and wood planks that would spew out.

Since tonight is poker night for Bob we stopped at Arby’s to pick up dinner because there surely would be no time to cook. This adventure in floor covering buying took much longer than expected. When it was all said and done, Bob’s headache was so bad he opted to stay home and relax rather than go play poker

We get home, we pick out the one we like the best by process of elimination and we’re set! Uh, yeah right.

Bob stayed home and relaxed and I went to the Cantina to play Mexican Train.

As we were sitting down to play, a fellow winter resident, Jackie and her visiting daughter came through and we invited them to play with us. Roxanne, the daughter, sat to my right which meant whatever she did influenced my next move. She had never played before and caught on quickly. Yes, she screwed me royally a few times but all in all she was a pleasure to play with. Until….. Out of the blue she came out with, “I can’t wait to get home and tell everybody I played Mexican Train with ….old people. Did I hear that right? Old people? OLD PEOPLE???? I just wanted to smack her up long side her head. OLD PEOPLE INDEED! She was kidding of course. You were kidding weren’t you Rox??? Come to find out she is just ten years younger than me, a mere blink of an eye in the grand scheme of things. Right?

A good time was had by all and we laughed a lot which made the whole evening worthwhile.

Thirty days of truth will continue tomorrow.
