5/5/07 A Visit to Hot Springs

Today we went into downtown Hot Springs for a few hours.

First thing I noticed was the magnolia trees are just starting to bloom here.

Along the main street are buildings that once housed public baths. Hotel chains have bought the buildings and if you want to take a bath in the hot spring water now you have to go to one of the "spa" hotels and pay out the nose for it. There is one building that is being renovated now and we heard that it may operate as the bath houses used to back in the day.

The water comes out of the springs at least 140 degrees and can be as hot as 250 degrees. Look at this next picture and you can see the "steam".
There are spring water "stations" all around town like this one pictured below and we surprised at how many people there were filling jugs of this hot spring water.

While in town we rode a "duck". This is a tour vehicle that holds about 25 people. The unusual thing is that it is a boat with wheels, an amphibious vehicle. We toured the town and then drove into a lake and took a 20 minute "drive" downstream.
After returning to the campground we fed the fish again, sat outside in the cool evening air and watched TV the rest of the evening. That was our day.
