4/11/2009 Welcome to.....

C A L I F O R N I A !

This is our second visit to California. Last year we went in on I-8 and this year we made our entrance on I-10.

We had a nice travel day today and we were on the road by 9:30 this morning. Just like we like to travel, on the road after nine and off by three.

Its been a long time since I posted one of these, in fact its been a long time since I've taken a picture of one, but we are on the road again and the practice must continue. LaVon, here's your dead tree picture for the day.

Actually, its a bunch of dead trees! I don't know what blight got these palms but they were sure a sad looking bunch.

These clouds seemed to be resting on these mountains.

Soon we came upon the windmill farm. I think these things are such a good idea! I've heard Delaware wants to put some out in the Delaware Bay but the PETA people are up in arms because a seagull may fly into one.

It was soooo good to see GREEN again! And we were so glad we weren't in that traffic coming towards us!

About three o'clock, right on schedule we pulled into the place where we'll spend the next two weeks or so. Seabreeze RV Resort, at Seal Beach, California.

The little RV park where we'll be staying.

We arrived on a weekend when the camp host takes over duty and he got us the information on our site and an information packet to read later. Before we pulled into our site we made use of this RV wash station to get all the dirt, dust and bugs off our rig. RV'ers....Wouldn't it be nice if all RV parks had one of these?

The Naval Weapons Station, Seal Beach was originally constructed during World War II for loading, unloading, and storing of ammunition for the Pacific Fleet, and especially those US Navy warships home-ported in Long Beach and San Diego, California. With closure of the Concord Naval Weapons Station in Northern California, it has become the primary source of munitions for a majority of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Because of the high security situation here I have to request a "camera pass" in order to take pictures on base. So far I haven't seen anything of interest to me to take pictures of but then I haven't seen a whole lot of the base to begin with. I'm hoping I didn't need the pass to take the picture of the RV wash station!

So this is home for the next two weeks or so. There is lots to do and see in the area. We are just 20 minutes from Disneyland and right now they are offering a special to military families so I think a visit to the mouse is in our future. Six Flag's Magic Mountain in nearby as is Universal Studios. With military passes that we can buy it would be foolish of us not to take in these attractions. For example, Magic Mountain would normally cost $60.00 per person, BOTH of us can get in for $48.00.

"In season" sport fishing. We have to find out if this is in season or not and if it is Bob will definitely be going fishing! A half day of ocean fishing is only $24.00 for him with his military discount.

The ship, RMS Queen Mary is docked close by so that may be in our tour plans also as is Old Mission San Juan Capistrano. The latter is where the swallows gather when they migrate in March. We may take the Catalina Island Tour and I'm sure there will be day trips where we'll leave in the early morning and return at evening.

We hope to show you a good time as we start this adventure to Alaska.

Well, we're not done yet. I still have a few things I can get rid of in my folder.

Diet Questions Answered -- MY way...

Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life; is this true?

A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it... don't waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?

A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable products.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?

A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?

A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?

A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain...Good!

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?

A: YOU'RE NOT LISTENING!!!.... Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?

A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?

A: Are you crazy? Hello? Cocoa beans! Another vegetable!!! It's the best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?

A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?

A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape!

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets. And remember: 'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways with a cabernet in one hand, chocolate in the other, and a body thoroughly used up--totally worn out and screaming 'WOOHOO. What a ride!

AND......For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional studies.

1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

3. The Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

5. The Germans drink a lot of beers and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

CONCLUSION Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you .
